IOR: Clarifications regarding reports on the order issued by the Budapest Court

Vatican City, October 24, 2026 – In relation to recent reports concerning the order issued by the Budapest Court on October 21, 2026, the IOR considers it necessary to clarify certain matters of fundamental importance, in response to the opposing party’s reconstruction of the events, which contains serious inaccuracies at both procedural and factual levels.

The measure does not constitute a judgment, but rather an order issued in default by the Hungarian Court under domestic procedural law.

Accordingly, the Court has neither examined the merits of the dispute, nor assessed whether the opposing party’s claims were well founded, nor established any liability on the part of the IOR. It merely applied a procedural provision under Hungarian law. The IOR will lodge an objection in accordance with the prescribed time limits and procedures, so that the proceedings may continue in the ordinary course and the dispute may be examined on its merits.

The IOR reiterates its full confidence in the Hungarian judiciary, and trusts that the continuation of the proceedings will allow for a comprehensive examination of the facts, the evidence and the positions of the parties, in accordance with the procedures and safeguards provided for by law.

Furthermore, the IOR reserves the right to take appropriate actions to protect its rights and interests in the appropriate fora in relation to misleading communications that may be detrimental to its image, reputation or activities.
