The Prelate’s role is to assist in situ administrators and employees in governing and operating according to the founding principles of Catholic ethics and consistently with the Institute’s mission. Appointed by the Commission of Cardinals, his term of office is five years, renewable once.

Monsignor Battista Mario Salvatore Ricca has been Prelate of IOR since 2013.
Since 2009, he has been working in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State.
After working in the Nunciatures of Congo, Algeria, Colombia, Switzerland, Uruguay and Trinidad & Tobago, he served in the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State from 2005 to 2009.
He studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy from 1985 to 1989.
