Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló

Cardinal Santos Abril y Castelló was the Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St Mary Major since November 2011 until December 28, 2016. He has been made Cardinal Deacon of San Ponziano in February 2012, and has been Vice-Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church since January 2011. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1967, serving as secretary at the nunciatures in Pakistan and in Turkey. He went on to serve in Argentina as well as various Balkan and Central African countries. He was appointed titular Archbishop of Tamada in April 1985 and received episcopal ordination in June 1985. At the same time, he was nominated apostolic nuncio in Bolivia. He studied at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas and the Pontifical Gregorian University after being ordained a priest in March 1960 in the diocese of Teruel. He is a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Congregation for Bishops. Santos Abril y Castelló was born on September 21, 1935 in Alfambra, Spain.
